After three years, Makoto Shinkai's new movie is finally here, Suzume No Tojimari ("Suzume’s Door-Locking“). The film is a modern action-adventure road story where a 17-year-old girl named Suzume helps a mysterious young man close doors from the outer side, releasing disasters all over Japan.
Check out the movie's official trailer below
The trailer opens with Suzume opening the lone door in the middle of a flooded ruin which opens all other supernatural doors in Japan, unleashing catastrophes all over Japan. It is now up to her and another mysterious young man to close the portals and prevent further damage.
Suzume no Tojimari opens in Japan on November 11, 2022. Crunchyroll, Sony Pictures, and Wild Bunch aim to release the international theatrical release in early 2023. Shinkai also announced that Suzume no Tojimari will get its own novel adaptation. Suzume no Tojimari also introduced Nanoka Hara, who will be voicing the titular protagonist of the movie, Suzume, who also happens to sing the movie's theme song.
The movie features Shinkai's impeccable art style, one with such attention to detail that it could be recognized immediately. And if you are wondering why, it's because the Art Director is still Takumi Tanji, who has worked on five of Shinkai's movies. The Animation Director of this movie will be Kenichi Tsuchiya, who has also worked on Your Name and The Garden of Words, and the character design will be handled by Masayoshi Tanaka, who has designed the characters of Your Name and Weathering with You.
The production house for the upcoming movie is CoMix Wave Films and Story Inc, with Toho animation being the leading distributor of the film.
The trailer featured a three-legged chair that was said to play a significant role between the movie's leads, following them on their journey to save the world.
The tied cord around Suzume's neck and the flooded cities hint that the third movie shares the same world as Shinkai's previous movies. We may be able to see cameos of characters from previous Shinkai movies, just like how we did in Tenki no Ko.
